On July 19th, at the Ancestral Health Symposium in Bozeman, Montana this year, I got to meet Darryl Edwards! Darryl Edwards, the creator of Primal Play, is a movement coach, a play advocate, and personal trainer--known for the paradigm shifting, joyfully playful workshops he gives around the world. Tugging people, getting tugged, trying to stay on sidewalk cracks while tapping other people, playing around with my own limits as well as with engaging with others, transported me back to my childhood. A joyful feeling--gleeful and deeply satisfying--connected me more deeply and honestly to my whole being and left me aware of the limitations I tend to put on myself in the way I was defining my identity as a middle aged woman. Just like that--with a very surprised grunt--I found more of myself and rediscovered the lost art of play. When Darryl told us the story of a woman who wasn't strong enough to pull her husband to safety, I realized that I wanted to always be strong enough to be able to lift my husband. When a young woman was able to tug me along with ease, I realized that I wanted to get mentally determined enough to hold my own. When I couldn't easily crawl around like an alligator, I knew that I would keep trying until I could. Adding primal play to my lifestyle has made my world a little richer, more vibrant and more connected to others. It has made me better friends with my own body. Thanks, Darryl! His newest book, Animal Moves, inspires as well as teaches how to add Primal Play to your life. And, you can always attend one of his workshops!
